Colombian Constitutional Court, made up of 9 member judges, voted to approve the special mechanism that accelerates the application of the peace accord the government and the guerilla movement FARC. The parliament had approved the accord on November 30.
After the Constitutional Court’s approval, the congress will be able to implement the peace accord within six months.
Senate President Mauricio Lizcano announced that guerillas will be pardoned and this law could be presented to the parliament on Wednesday.
The government will present other similar proposals, such as the inclusion of the guerillas in political life and the struggle against paramilitary forces, to the parliament.
President Juan Manuel Santos and guerilla leader Rodrigo Londono had signed the 300 page-long peace accord after 4 years of negotiations. The historic accord ends the 50 year-old armed conflict in the country. The accord was initially rejected during a referendum on October 2.
More than 260 thousand people lost their lives, 60 thousand people disappeared and 6.9 people were forced to migrate during the decades-long war in the country.
