Court cancels Taksim Barracks project
Istanbul 1st Administrative Court canceled the Taksim pedestrianization project and the Artillery Baracks project.
The court had reportedly ruled the stay of execution on 6 June after the planned project sparked protests which began in Gezi Park and soon spread to many other cities as thousands took to the streets to protest against the project, defending green areas and their protection.
Countrywide protests faced excessive use of police force and violence against demonstrators, leading to the death of five people, including one police officer and to the injury of thousands of people during the month of June.
Turkish Doctors' Union (TTB) said on 18 June that four people were killed and 7822 people wounded, 59 severely, as a result of brutal police attack against Gezi Park protestors across the country.
Despite the cancellation of the project on 6 June, the court decision was not disclosed until yesterday. According to the reports, the court canceled not only the Barracks but also all projects on Taksim Square.
After the decision made by the court on 6 May, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism appealed against the ruling of the court which has however once again agreed on the stay of execution with the majority of votes, defending that the project had no legal grounds and went against the principles of contemporary urban planning.
In a statement to the press in front of Gezi Park, Taksim Solidarity platform evaluated the ruling as the proof of the fair struggle people have given.
