The 16 years and 8 months’ prison sentence handed out to police officer Fatih Dalgalı, who killed Berkin Elvan was upheld. The young boy was killed by a gas canister thrown at his head during the Gezi Park protests in 2013. The 1st Penal Chamber of the Istanbul Regional Court of Justice upheld the sentence.
According to Medyascope, the court rejected the request of the lawyers of the Elvan family to sentence the defendant police officer Dalgalı for the crime of "qualified wilful killing", and also rejected the requests of the police officer's lawyers to acquit the accused, as the decision was against the procedure and the law.
If the decision is upheld by the Supreme Court, Fatih Dalgalı will be arrested and imprisoned.
