Court to rule on Gezi retrial on Monday

The court of the sixth hearing of the Gezi retrial did not hand down its ruling which is now expected on Monday.

The ruling at the Gezi retrial was expected to be handed down by the court on Friday. However, this did not happen and the ruling is now expected on Monday. 

Following the statements by defendants Hakan Altınay, Mücella Yapıcı, Mine Özerden, Çiğdem Mater, Can Atalay, Tayfun Kahraman, Yiğit Ali Ekmekçi and Osman Kavala, the hearing continued with lawyers' statements.

The court board ended the hearing at around 5 pm and said that it should continue with the statements of the remaining lawyers on  Monday, 25 April. The ruling is also expected to be handed down on Monday.

200 people including representatives from the European Commission, consuls or representatives from European countries, MPs from Turkey, representatives from NGOs and journalists followed the hearing.

In his final opinion as to the accusations, the prosecutor requested aggravated life sentence for Kavala and Yapıcı and 15 to 20 years in prison for defendants Çiğdem Mater, Ali Hakan Altınay, Mine Özerden, Şerafettin Can Atalay, Tayfun Kahraman and Yiğit Ali Ekmekçi.

In the indictment, the Gezi Park protesters are described as "attempting to stage a coup". 16 rights defenders ( plus Henry Jack Barkey) are facing charges for "organizing the protests".
