CPT avoids straight answers on Kurdish hunger strikes

Council of Europe's Committee for the Prevention of Torture Executive Secretary Regis Brillat avoided giving straight answers on questions about the hunger strikes and said they are engaged in “active dialogue” with Turkish officials.

Mustafa Temizkan, the son of Leyla Guven who is still on a hunger strike, for 105 days, requested an audience with Committee for the Prevention of Torture Executive Secretary Regis Brillat about the hunger strikers.

Temizkan stated that his mother Leyla Guven, political prisoners and other Kurdish activists on hunger strikes are at a critical stage and added that the hunger strikers’ families request a visit.

Brillat responded to Temizkan via e-mail and said they are engaged in active dialogue with Turkish officials.

Brillat said, “Unfortunately I am not currently in Strasbourg, and I am not prepared for a meeting.”

Brillat assured Temizkan that “the CPT is engaged in active dialogue with Turkish authorities” and added: “In this framework, previously stated concerns regarding persons on hunger strikes in Strasbourg and elsewhere are being addressed.”

The e-mail did not include any information on what kind of a dialogue was in place, what results it got or whether the CPT will visit Imrali or not.

Brillat also said complementary information on the hunger strikes should be submitted to the CPT secretariat through the mail or e-mail.
