The Democratic Regions Party (DBP) Central Executive Committee (MYK) issued a written statement regarding the PKK's decision to lay down arms and dissolve. The statement, titled “The 50-year struggle to defend a people has evolved into a political and democratic struggle with Mr. Öcalan's call on February 27,” emphasized the importance of the PKK’s decision announced earlier today.
The DBP statement reads as follows: "The final declaration announced today by the PKK following its 12th Congress held on May 5-7 marks a new beginning for the resolution of the Kurdish issue and Turkey's democratization process. The decisions taken at the Congress will open the door to lasting peace not only for Kurdistan and Turkey, but also for the entire Middle East.
The Kurdish Freedom Movement continues to bear responsibility to establish a democratic life in a multicultural, multi-identity society, as it has done in the past. In order for a free and equal life to be realized and for ongoing efforts to succeed, the state and government must take steps, and the political and social opposition must also embrace this process strongly.
The Kurdish people, who suffered greatly in the 20th century, have carried their struggle for language, culture, identity, and status into the present day at a heavy cost. This struggle is now taking shape in this century around the axes of freedom, justice, and democratic transformation. We once again affirm the need for a resolute will to build a shared life and establish a new social order based on universal law, human rights, and democratic principles. We are at a historic turning point for the success of the process initiated by Mr. Öcalan on February 27 and strengthened by the 12th Congress of the PKK. With this awareness, we must embrace the process and strengthen the will for a solution, making it the primary agenda of all social dynamics, especially politics.
The 50-year struggle to defend a people has evolved into a political and democratic struggle with Mr. Öcalan's call on February 27. Embracing the Peace and Democratic Society process and strengthening this ground is a historic responsibility. With this sense of responsibility, we bow with respect before the memory of all those who have lost their lives from the past to the present. We declare to our people that we will embrace the process with all our will and effort and give it strength in order to build the democratic future they dreamed of.”
