DEM Party MPs stated that Abdullah Öcalan’s statement served as a reminder of their responsibilities.
Abdullah Öcalan’s historic call was shared with the public following the third meeting at Imrali Island Prison. In this statement, Öcalan called for disarmament and declared: "As every contemporary society and political party would voluntarily do when not forcibly dissolved, you should convene your congress and make a decision for integration with the state and society. All groups must lay down their arms, and the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) must dissolve itself."
Our duty is to build a democratic society
Speaking to ANF, Sezai Temelli, Group Deputy Chair of the Peoples' Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party), emphasized that the call placed a responsibility on everyone, and he said: "It was a historic statement. In a very brief declaration, it provided an extremely significant assessment of the entire history, addressing both the Cold War era and the period from the Second World War to the present. It was a call for a struggle that emerged under specific conditions to restructure itself in the new century and under new circumstances. Therefore, even though the call was seemingly directed at the PKK, in reality, it was a message for everyone. The same conditions that led to the formation of the PKK can only be eliminated through democracy and the rule of law."
Temelli added: "All political actors must take action to ensure Turkey's democratization and to establish a solid legal framework for the future. In this sense, it was a highly significant call, one that requires everyone to take responsibility. If you pay attention while addressing this issue and evaluating historical developments, the statement highlighted that what is lacking is a democratic way of life and a democratic society. It made clear that once this is established, peace can flourish on this foundation. This means that our responsibility is to build a democratic society, fight for democratization, and ensure that the rule of law is upheld. We have received our task, and from this moment on, we are starting to work towards it. I truly believe that Turkey and the region will soon attain the long-awaited peace."
We will do everything in our power as the DEM Party
Saruhan Oluç, MP for Antalya from the DEM Party, underscored the emphasis on democracy in the statement. He said: "This is a truly historic call. Every sentence in the statement evaluates both the past and the present. We found it to be incredibly impactful. It presents a political stance backed by strong reasoning. Therefore, this historic call is significant for all of us. Mr. Öcalan expressed what needed to be said, based on his own reasoning and political stance. He demonstrated a resolute will and pointed to what must be done."
Oluç added: "These necessary steps should be viewed from two perspectives. First, what he said to his own organization; and second, what he addressed to Turkey. He stated that the Turkish state and government must take steps in the areas of democratization, political reform, and legal transformation. In doing so, he issued a call for action.
Thus, he reminded everyone of their duties and signaled that if these steps are taken progressively, then a positive outcome can be achieved. We hope that everyone, especially the government and the state, has understood what needs to be done and will begin to take action accordingly. As DEM Party, we will do everything in our power to ensure these steps are taken in the political and legal spheres, within the framework of democratic politics. We will strengthen our struggle, working together with all Kurdish political institutions. Hopefully, together, we will achieve a successful outcome."
