Demirtaş: Öcalan's text to be discussed soon
Speaking about the recent meeting of a Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) delegation with the jailed leader of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), Abdullah Öcalan, BDP co-chair Selahattin Demirtaş said the Kurdish leader was currently working on a draft text which would be conveyed to the BDP for discussion in a near future. Demirtaş noted that they expected the administration of Imralı Prison to convey Öcalan's draft text to BDP's side in a few days, underlining that the draft text will then be brought to a conclusion by Öcalan following BDP's evaluation.
“This process is intended to be ended within the next two to three weeks and everyone should present their proposals on a solution to the Kurdish question within this time”, he underlined.
BDP co-chair remarked that the Imralı meeting last week had raised both concerns and hopes, adding; "The government's approach towards the process will play an important role. We expect the government to keep the current process going by taking more serious and practical steps because of the fact that the whole burden of the process cannot be laid on Mr. Öcalan alone. The public opinion and its support is also of importance as everyone needs to unite for the same purpose to ensure a solution”.
"I hope - he added - this historic process will not be wasted for insignificant and partisan interests".
There is no concrete schedule or a project yet but everybody who sides with a solution should display determination and we are ready to take the political responsibility of the ongoing process.
Asked about the probability of the release of soldiers imprisoned by the PKK, Demirtaş said that “We do not have concrete information about the subject but we will be assuming a political, moral and conscientious responsibility”.
Asked about the possibility of a new visit to the Kurdish leader on Imralı island, Demirtaş said that a new delegation needs to make a visit to Imralı and it doesn't matter who will be taking part in the delegation because any deputy to go to the island will be performing the same duty.
Asked about Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's allegations on PKK's withdrawal from Turkish borders, Demirtaş said “The PM's calls to the PKK could be important in terms of molding public opinion but it is Öcalan's call that will convince the PKK about withdrawal. The PM should wait for the call of the Kurdish leader”.
