Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) Central Executive Committee led by co-chairs Selahattin Demirtaş and Figen Yüksekdağ gathered in party headquarters to assess the “lifting of immunity” and developments in the region.
The meeting was held with missing members due to arrests. Demirtaş answered journalists’ questions and commented on AKP’s proposed Constitutional amendment bill to “lift parliamentary immunities” and CHP’s position on the matter.
Demirtaş said: “Parties have their own prerogative. They will decide for themselves. But it is a grave mistake to support such an apparent political revenge attempt with such enthusiasm. We have also proposed a bill on restricting and lifting parliamentary immunity, and it is both in line with universal law and formed with reference to democratic European countries.
If they are sincere about the lifting of immunities, they can support HDP’s proposal, and we will say yes as well. Let’s restrict the immunities, of all 4 parties together. But it seems that AKP aims to throw HDP MPs to the hands of the judiciary that has become subordinate and dependent on them, a judiciary that takes direct orders from them. The main opposition party should calculate this simple and cheap trap. It is surprising that they have declared unquestioning support for a proposal that is so clearly against the Constitution. It is their prerogative. We don’t have anybody to fear except God, and we don’t have anything we can’t account for. If the thieves, the plunderers stealing the nation’s money, and those who can’t find enough space to stash the loot will have immunity and ours will be lifted because of our ideas, that will be a medal of honor for us.”
When asked “What is HDP’s next move?” and “Will HDP leave the parliament?”, Demirtaş said “There is nothing we can do if the 3 parties band together and decide to change the Constitution. What we can do is to stand tall against this mentality that dares change the constitution for political revenge.”
The meeting started after Demirtaş’s important comments. The main agenda on the meeting is the lifting of the immunities and the developments in the region. A declaration is expected after the meeting.
