Demirtaþ: Attacks on BDP aimed at weaken Kurds

Speaking to Nuçe TV on recent developments in Turkey and the Middle East, Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) co-chair Selahattin Demirtaþ said that the Kurdish people might issue a call to domestic and international opininon for national self-determination in the event that their deputies are stripped off of their parliamentary immunity.

Referring to the recent motions submitted to the Parliament for the removal of parliamentary immunity of thirteen deputies of the BDP, including three jailed deputies, Demirtaþ said that "these motions have been put forward in conjunction with the political developments in recent history when the AKP government has failed to exercise influence over Kurdish people by means of political and military operations inside and outside Turkey, as well as the isolation policy, psychological war operations and its racist and nationalist policy against Kurds".

BDP co-chair pointed out that the AKP government should at this point make a choice between whether to recognize the will of the Kurdish people or to impose elimination by using all ways possible. He remarked that the motions against BDP immunity should be seen as a part of the operation for weakening the Kurdish movement.

Demirtaþ noted that the removal of parliamentary immunity of BDP deputies will officilly prove the fact that Erdoðan will never respect the will of the Kurdish people. However, he added, "Kurds will never insist on taking a chance on entering the Parliament should they once again be expelled from it like what happened in 1994 [when Democracy Party's (DEP) deputies were stripped of their parliamentary immunity and put into jail in 1994 for alleged ties with the Kurdistan Workers' Party PKK]. There is a need for a more serious historical discussion beyond a debate between the BDP and the AKP."

BDP co-chair said that all deputies of the BDP, as well as DTK (Democratic Society Congress) and HDK (People's Democratic Congress), will organize common action and make new evaluations should any of the BDP members in the Parliament be deprived of their parliamentary immunity.
