In a statement to the press near the Diyarbakýr E Type Prison where the Governor denied permission for the Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) weekly group meeting on Tuesday, BDP co-chair Selahattin Demirtaþ repeated Kurdish people’s demand for the resolution of the Kurdish problem through peaceful ways.
Demirtaþ pointed out that the Turkish government has not answered to BDP’s stance for doing its part to end hunger strike and remarked that the Kurdish people have taken to the streets today to prevent potential deaths in prisons as the fast of Kurdish political prisoners have entered the 49th day.
BDP co-chair underlined that; “Considering the fact that it is a natural right to use mother language in education and self-defense at court, the hunger strike staged to obtain this right is a shame of those who impose this ban, not of those who start this action. It is the AKP policies that have started and will end these death fasts.”
Reminding that the death fast of prisoners have already reached a critical stage, Demirtaþ noted Prime Minister is telling a lie to the people by claiming that prisoners are provided with all necessary substances.
Referring to the isolation on PKK (Kurdistan Workers Party) Leader Abdullah Öcalan, BDP co-chair said that; “The government should ensure Mr. Öcalan’s release from Imralý, not his brother’s visit to there. The problem needs to be approached seriously as many people are dying in this country every day.”
Indicating dialogue and negotiation as the only way to end the hunger strikes, Demirtaþ repeated BDP co-chairs’ demand for a visit to Imralý Island and said this could be the first step on the way to a solution to the Kurdish problem. He pointed out that the meeting here could be followed by another with the government so that the first mutual steps could be taken for a solution.
However, he added, “if the government continues to remain deaf to the strikes and to subject us to outrage, we will be using our right to resistance and not spend another 30 years waiting for mercy from authorities”.
BDP co-chair ended calling on the Turkish government to present a straight answer and the media to provide support to end the hunger strikes.
