HDP youth activists gathered in the Koşuyolu Park in central Amed (Diyarbakır) to make a statement about the hunger strikes in Turkey’s prisons demanding an end to the isolation imposed upon Kurdish People's Leader Abdullah Öcalan.
The park had been blockaded by the police with barriers already before the planned press statement. A large number of armored vehicles and anti-riot water cannon vehicles (TOMA) were deployed around the park. Activists who entered the park were therewith surrounded in groups by the police.
While HDP Amed Deputy Semra Güzel talked with the police chiefs to remove the obstacle, the police stated that they would not allow the action.
Peace Mothers, who were among the protesters under the police blockade, sang songs in Kurdish during the long negotiations. Other groups under the blockade often chanted "Biji berxwedana zindana" (Long live the prison resistance) and "Political prisoners are our honor". The crowd in the park dispersed when the negotiations with the police failed.
HDP Youth Assembly recalled in a written statement that the hunger strike has entered its 69th day and said, "They are getting closer to death day by day. The struggles of the prisoners stand like a fortress against the persecution of the ruling fascists. Their demands are the demands of everyone."
Protesting the anti-Kurdish policies of the government, the statement by the HDP Youth Assembly emphasized that, "The existence of Abdullah Öcalan is the hope of freedom for all the peoples of the world. This hope has become the fear of the AKP-MHP regime. Everyone should know that we will deepen this fear of the government, we will drown them in their fears."
The Youth Assembly said "The responsibility of breaking the isolation on Imrali is on our shoulders because the philosophy of Mr. Öcalan is the expression of a new perspective and an honorable life for the youth. And this honorable life can be realized through the freedom of Abdullah Öcalan. Just as those who followed the July 14 resistance could break the isolation in 2019, the prisoners will also succeed in their resistance today. It is obligatory for us to raise the hunger strike struggle. Let's raise this struggle. Victory is ours."
