Democracy Vigil in Amed: Öcalan can end the war

The democracy vigil in Amed was supported today by guests from Germany, Istanbul and Ankara. HDP politician Fatma Kurtulan said: "The Kurdish issue as Turkey's biggest problem can only be solved in a democratic way."

In Amed (Diyarbakir), a democracy vigil took place for the 48th consecutive day. The vigil is held near the Town Hall in protest at the Turkish Ministry of the Interior’s appointment of trustee in the place of Co-mayor Selçuk Mizrakli of the HDP.

In addition to numerous HDP politicians, parliamentarian Kirsten Lühmann of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), members of the HDP Youth Council, the women's movement TJA and the Initiative of the Peace Mothers took part in today's vigil. Members of the Peace and Movie Platform, including director Çayan Demirel, came to Amed from Istanbul and Ankara to support the vigil.

HDP Parliamentary Group Deputy Chair Fatma Kurtulan made a speech at the vigil and pointed to the Kurdish question. She said a democratic solution is a must and viable through dialogue, adding; “This problem cannot be solved by means of security policies. Those before you tried it too but failed, as will you fail. Indeed, your end is nearing.”

Kurtulan recalled the remarks of Kurdish People’s Leader Abdullah Öcalan, who said in a recent meeting with his lawyers that he was ready for a solution and could stop the conflict within a week.

Calling for an end to the policies of war, the HDP MP underlined that; "Peace can be achieved through dialogue. If Mr. Öcalan is given the opportunity, this war can be ended. He says he is ready for it. And society is behind him, too. The Kurdish question as the biggest problem of Turkey can be solved in a democratic way.”
