On November 3rd, demonstrators gathered at the Turkish Embassy in Washington, D.C. in the United States to protest the imprisonment of HDP Co-Chairs Selahattin Demirtaş and Figen Yüksekdağ, as well as all other political prisoners in Turkey. About 15 people attended and chanted slogans calling for freedom for HDP parliamentarians and mayors and standing against Turkish fascism. The demonstration lasted two hours and remained peaceful throughout.
Demonstrator Ceren Borazan said "I was there to stand for what is right. I believe that wherever we are, we should stand behind our beliefs. Many Kurdish MPs, mayors, and civilians are jailed in Turkey because of their opinions. They believe in equality and democracy. Their bodies can be imprisoned but their ideas and reflections are still free, alive, and productive. No one can imprison the ideas and the truth-- such as Mr. Demirtas's book "Seher" which he wrote in jail and just published. Expressing the truth and struggling for it is never limited."
Another demonstrator, Meghan Bodette, hopes the American people will see this action and other actions in the United States as a call to support the Kurdish people and the struggle for freedom and democratic society worldwide, saying that "the values that HDP MPs were imprisoned for defending- pluralism, freedom, democracy and justice-- are universal. Whenever they are challenged, everyone must stand up to defend them and show solidarity with those who are threatened for doing so. I am disappointed in my government's support for the Turkish state while it commits these crimes against the Kurdish people, and encourage all Americans to oppose this policy."
Demonstrator Rojhat Amed, said he attended because "last year today, MPs elected with millions of votes were arrested by the fascist Turkish state. Erdogan did this to threaten the Kurdish people and to weaken their struggle, but as we see today, our struggle and resistance didn't end! Rather, it is stronger- today millions of people are on the streets asking for the freedom of their MPs, and our courage and resistance will free our MPs and our lands! Terrorist Erdogan and his fascist government must know that from Seyit Riza to Kemal Pir and Mazlum Dogan, we didn't surrender and we never will. Fascism will lose!"
