Demonstration in Vienna on the occasion of World Kobanê Day

A demonstration took place in Vienna on the occasion of the upcoming World Kobanê Day. The demonstrators protested against Turkey's ongoing attacks on Rojava and against the AKP/MHP dictatorship.

World Kobanê Day has been marked since 1 November 2014, when countless people from Afghanistan to Australia took to the streets to stand up for the city in northern Syria, which was already almost completely occupied by ISIS, and to support the defenders of Kobanê. The global outcry and unwavering resistance in Kobanê led to the fight against ISIS receiving US air support and the Islamist terrorist militia suffering its first defeat.

A demonstration promoted by the Democratic Kurdish Community Centre and the Alliance of Democratic Forces took place in Vienna on Sunday to mark World Kobanê Day. Rojava is still acutely threatened and attacked daily by Turkey. The activists marched through the Austrian capital chanting slogans. Demonstrators recalled the sacrificial struggle of Kobanê, which marked the beginning of the downfall of the territorial existence of ISIS, in which women's resistance in particular played an important role.

A speaker at the rally said: "The fact that the resistance was led by women gave it even more significance. We salute the women's revolution that began in Kobanê and spread to all the cities of Rojava. The resistance of Kobanê went down in history as a resistance of women, a resistance in the name of human values and the defence of one's dignity and identity. Kobanê became a symbolic city for a free, equal and collective life. Kobanê is also a symbol of international solidarity, international resistance and common will."

The activists also recalled the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Republic of Turkey and said that there was no reason to celebrate because the first century was marked by genocide and massacres of Armenians, Kurds, Syriacs, Circassians, Greeks and many other identities and peoples. They pointed out that the Turkish state must finally face up to this history and build its second century as a century of coexistence based on the paradigm of a democratic nation. During the demonstration, "Long live the resistance of Kobanê" and "Long live the resistance of Rojava" were repeatedly shouted. With the slogan "Bijî Serok Apo" (Long Live Leader Öcalan), solidarity was expressed with the radical democratic system in Rojava with its idea-giver, Abdullah Öcalan, who is totally isolated on the prison island of Imrali.
