Demonstrators in Yüksekova attacked by soldiers

Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) Yüksekova district organization staged a march to the Rahmo Hill in Dostki region on Thursday to protest against the construction of a new military post on the hill.

The march was joined by hundreds of people including Mayor of Yüksekova, Ercan Bora, Mayor of Esendere, Hurşit Altekin, BDP district organization chair Nail Durmaz and activists of MEYA-DER, KURDI-DER and Peace Mothers Initiative.

“We will not allow the construction of posts nor the invasion of Kurdistan”, read the banner they carried.

While on the way to the hill, the mass was prevented by Turkish soldiers who didn't allow demonstrators to go further. Soldiers attacked the mass as they insisted on continuing their march. Two women were wounded in the tear gas attack.

Speaking on behalf of the demonstrators, BDP district chair Nail Durmaz said that four old women were effected by the intense tear gas soldiers used against the mass. Durmaz said the attacks against the people will not break their will as they voice their demands for the accomplishment of the democratic resolution process in search of a peaceful solution to the Kurdish question. The mass overcame the barricade and reached the hill.

Soldiers once again attacked demonstrators on their way back from the hill. Youths responded to the attack with stones and fireworks. Clashes between demonstrators and soldiers lasted hours.
