Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoðlu told a joint news conference with his Danish counterpart, Lene Espersen, that Turkey is in close contact with Denmark in the fight against terrorism and that the two countries are ready to work on these issues, including an investigation into Roj TV, a media institution Turkey claims is financed by the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).
Espersen was once again forced to explain that things do not work exactly like Turkey seems to think in Europe, as long as freedom of the press goes. Danish ministers, remarked Espersen, do not order the closure of TV stations. He said that referring to Roj TV, when asked why the station is still broadcasting.
The Danish foreign minister said the decision to shut down TV stations is independent of a political system in Denmark and that there is no way the government can interfere in these decisions.
He said he thinks a court hearing will take place in August of this year and that the judges will decide whether or not to close the media institution.
Espersen and Davutoðlu had bilateral talks before the press conference and discussed Turkey’s relations with the European Union, in particular accession.
