DIHA reporter arrested in İzmir

Dicle News Agency (DIHA) reporter Deniz Tekin was arrested in the western province of İzmir on Tuesday.

Tekin was detained by police on the way to İzmir's Bayraklı district where he was later taken to the police headquarters. Tekin was on the same day sent to Buca open prison on the grounds of a warrant of arrest issued for him in 2010.

During his study at the Department of Press and Information of Anadolu University, Tekin had been sued by Eskişehir 2nd Criminal Court in May of 2006 in connection with a quarrel that broke out in the campus area as a group of nationalists attacked a stand opened by left-wing students. After his arrest on 17 May 2006, Tekin was released pending trial after a month. He was later sentenced to two years and three months in prison in February 2010. The Court issued a warrant of arrest for him following the approval of the prison sentence by the Supreme court.

With Tekin's arrest, the number of journalists in prison rose to 71. 26 journalists working for the Kurdish media have been under arrest since December 2011 when Turkish police carried out the most expansive operation against journalists in the scope of so-called KCK (Kurdish Communities Union) case.
