Dismissed co-mayor: AKP fighting Kurds instead of coronavirus!

Dismissed co-mayor of Ergani Municipality Meryem Yıldız said: "The AKP should be fighting against the coronavirus, but instead continues to fight against the will of the Kurdish people."

While the world is trying to deal with the coronavirus threat, the Turkish state continues its repressive policies against Kurds.

HDP-run municipalities of Batman, Ergani, Silvan, Lice and Eğil were seized by the government through an appointment of trustees on Monday.

Searches are continuing in Ergani Municipality. The HDP co-mayor, Ahmet Kaya, was taken into custody following a raid at his house and taken to the police headquarters.

Co-mayor Meryem Yıldız, who continues to wait in front of the cordoned off municipality building, is prevented by the police from entering.

Yıldız said that "the people of Ergani will not accept the seizure of their will."

Stating that she is not allowed to enter the municipality despite being its elected co-mayor, Yıldız added that even during the coronavirus days, the AKP is turning any crisis into an opportunity. "The AKP should be dealing with the coronavirus but instead is fighting against the will of the Kurdish people. The people of Turkey will bring the AKP to account for this."
