A number of people, including BDP (Peace and Democracy Party) Istanbul Deputy Sırrı Süreyya Önder, have been injured as a result of the violent police attack on Taksim Gezi Park protestors on Friday afternoon.
Hundreds of people started a sit-in at Taksim Square in the afternoon after demonstrators in the park area were forcibly driven out of the park by riot police using excessive tear gas and pressure water.
BDP Istanbul Deputy Sırrı Süreyya Önder, who has been resisting against the demolition of the park for the last four days, has also been shot in the shoulder by gas cannister and taken to Taksim hospital, reported BDP Mersin deputy Ertuğrul Kürkçü on his twitter account. A woman, who was in the same way hit by gas cannister on the eye, had a nervous attack.
Dozens of people have been injured today since the police blockade and attacks began early in the morning, around 5 am. Some of them have reportedly gone through a brain trauma and some others severely injured, including journalist Ahmet Şık who was hit by tear gas cannister on the head.
Police has also taken a number of Gezi Park protestors into custody.
BDP deputy Önder had early today expressed his reaction against the police brutality as follows; "We are tired of asking the same questions every day; where is the governor of this city, where is its mayor and where is the certificate of permission for this demolition? Police has tyrannized here for the last four days. No mayor can receive vote unless he defends the right of a single tree here".
Önder also criticized th Republican People's Party (CHP) for having put their signature to the demolition project.
