Dr. Kemal: A democratic Turkey will benefit the entire region

PYD South Kurdistan Representative Dr. Cawîdan Kemal pointed out that if Turkey democratizes after the 14 May elections, the countries in the region and the Kurds living in other parts will also be positively affected.

Democratic Union Party (PYD) South Kurdistan Representative Dr. Cawîdan Kemal spoke to ANF about the effects of the 14 May elections on Rojava Kurdistan and the region and the negotiations between Iran, Russia and Syria.

Pointing out that the elections to be held on 14 May in Turkey and North Kurdistan are historic, Dr. Kemal said: "The Erdogan government poses a serious obstacle to a political solution in the region. Because Erdogan, who played a negative role in the Syrian crisis, constantly supported and nurtured terrorist groups. Therefore, neighbouring countries will be positively affected by the change of the regime in Turkey towards democracy."

Stating that the Kurdish people constitute the dynamic of democracy in the four parts of Kurdistan, Dr. Kemal said: "Kurds want to live in brotherhood with other peoples and within the framework of the democratic nation system." Dr. Kemal stated that if the opposition in Turkey paves the way for democratic developments, as promised, the countries in the region and the Kurds living in other parts will also be positively affected.

Ankara-Damascus meetings are not for the benefit of the people

Dr. Kemal made the following evaluation regarding the negotiations between the Turkish state and the Damascus administration: "Erdogan intends to gain an advantage in the elections by meeting with the Assad regime. Because the issue of Syrian refugees is always on the agenda of the opposition in Turkey and Erdogan wants to find a solution to this problem. However, I do not think that the talks between Ankara and Damascus will reach a quick result. Because these talks are not for the benefit of the Syrian people, but only for both regimes."

Turkish occupation should end

Dr. Kemal said: "The Assad administration wants the occupation of Turkey to end, and this occupation is the main problem in the talks." He added that the Syrian crisis can only be resolved with the acceptance of the demands of the peoples who “should be asked what they want. Their demands should be taken as a basis. A system based on democracy should be established and the fundamental rights and freedoms of the Kurdish people should be guaranteed. All peoples can join hands to rebuild Syria."
