EP to suspend negotiations with Turkey

The European Parliament has passed the report on Turkey that proposed suspending the accession talks with Turkey. The report received 466 votes in favor.

The report prepared by the European Parliament’s (EP) Turkey Rapporteur Kati Piri called for a suspension of the accession talks with Turkey.

EP Turkey Rapporteur Dutch deputy Kati Piri prepared the draft, which called on the EU states and the European Commission to “immediately and officially suspend” accession talks with Turkey “if the constitutional amendment bundle voted on April 16 goes into effect in the current form”.

The report claims the reason for the decision is that the constitutional amendment is not compatible with the separation of powers principle and the Copenhagen criteria.

The EP had issued another decision in 2016 calling for a “freeze” on the accession talks.

The draft decision condemned the July 15 coup attempt and the terror attacks that have taken place in Turkey. It also stated that the government has the right and responsibility to subject the responsible parties to a fair trial within the confines of the rule of law.
