Erdoğan talked about YPG, Trump about the Korean War

The first face to face meeting between the US President Donal Trump and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has taken place in the White House.

The first face to face meeting between the US President Donal Trump and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has taken place in the White House.

The meeting in the White House lasted around 20 minutes. Speaking to the press after the meeting, US President Trump made a short statement and did not answer the questions of journalists.

Trump mentioned the historical relationship between Turkey and the US. He said Turkish soldiers “fought bravely alongside American soldiers in the Korean War”.

Trump noted that “The Turkish people have faced horrible terrorist attacks in recent years” and voiced support to the Turkish nation on this matter. He said they also supported the Turkish state in the fight against PKK.

Trump remarked that they “appreciate Turkey's leadership and seeking an end to the horrific killing in Syria”. He continued; “We also support any effort that can be used to reduce the violence in Syria and create the conditions for a peaceful resolution.”

Trump said they also discussed the need to reinvigorate the trade and commercial ties between the two countries.

“Military equipment was ordered by Turkey and the President and we have made sure that it gets them quickly”, he continued but made no mention of the YPG despite Turkey' sstrong criticism and reaction that was also highlighted by Erdoğan during the press conference.

While answering reporters' questions before the meeting, Trump left the question “Will you speak about the YPG” unanswered.

Speaking after Trump, Erdoğan said he believed this meeting “will mark a historic turning point”, and highlighted his desire to increase cooperation in the fields of economy, trade, energy, investment and defense industry. He also voiced his demand that the US does not take the PYD and YPG as counterparts.
