EU expects Turkey to uphold its commitment on refugees

Following the heavy blow suffered by Turkey in Idlib, Ankara said it won't stop refugees reaching Europe.

After the killing of dozens of Turkish soldiers in Syria’s Idlib last night, the Turkish state announced that they will no longer stop Syrian refugees from reaching Europe. In anticipation of the imminent arrival of refugees from Idlib, Turkish police, coast guard and border security officials have been ordered to stand down on refugees’ land and sea crossings, Turkish officials told Reuters.

The European Commission lead spokesperson for foreign affairs and security policy, Peter Stano said there was no official announcement from the Turkish side about any change to their asylum-seeker, refugee or migrant policy.

“We expect Turkey to uphold its commitment,” he added.

The German state, which has been following the refugee issue closely, is on alert in the face of latest developments. Chancellor of Germany, Angela Merkel talked to the Prime Minister of Greece, Kyriakos Mitsotakis on the phone after Greece had sent additional troops to the border following Turkey’s blackmail to set refugees loose.

On the other hand, the Defence Minister of Bulgaria announced that they were ready to deploy a thousand troops to the Turkish border against a probable migration wave.

The western region of Turkey have witnessed tragic scenes on Friday as refugees rushed to the border areas in an attempt to leave by the sea or land.
