The European Green Party (European Greens), which was founded in Rome in 2004 and represents 36 environmentalist parties in 32 European states, spoke out against the attacks on the Green Left Party on the eve of the 14 May elections in Turkey.
The European Greens shared a message about the attack on the Green Left Party in Mersin on its Twitter account and said: “We strongly condemn the recent attacks on the opposition in Turkey. We stand in solidarity with @YesillerSol, who faces intense and systematic repression as election day approaches.”
The European Greens urged voters in Turkey to go to the polls and said: "Let's end this election in the first round".
LAGODINSKY ALSO CONDEMNED ATTACKS
Sergey Lagodinsky, a member of the Greens/European Free Alliance (EFA) and a member of the European Parliament, also condemned the attacks against the opposition.
Lagodinsky said: “The violent events that took place on Sunday, including the brutal attack on an election vehicle of the Green Left Party in Mersin, and the brutal attack in Erzurum on Ekrem İmamoğlu, a candidate for Vice Presidency of the Nation Alliance, are open attacks on democracy.”
Wishing the injured a quick recovery, Lagodinsky reacted to the "threat against the democratic right to vote".
Lagodinsky remarked: "The upcoming elections in Turkey are of vital importance for the country, the region and the EU, and fair elections will be a sign of the sustainability and resilience of Turkish democracy."
Lagodinsky concluded: "I urge the authorities to do whatever it takes to ensure election safety and fair elections for all political opponents."
