Evangelical Church calls for peace in the Basque country

Spokesperson for human rights and migration of the Evangelical Church in Germany, Oberkirchenrat Thorsten Leisser, calls on all sides of the Basque-Spanish-French conflict, "to be aware of their respective responsibilities for the peace process". In his statement Leisser said:

"The direction of a non-violent solution to the conflict about the Basque Country is welcome. Courage, perseverance and willingness to engage with the perception of the opponent are key to it. The unilateral end of the armed campaign by ETA has been an important step. Now it seems time has come for further signs of reconciliation, as through the application of existing laws with regard to the release of seriously ill prisoners and of those who already met the conditions for early release. The path of peace is always marked by gestures of growing mutual trust. I hope and pray that all parties to the conflict are aware of their responsibility for the peace process and take appropriate measures to prepare a solution that will live up to everyone’s expectations."
