Event at the Uniting Church of Australia marks World Kobanê Day

As part of World Kobanê Day, an event was held in Sydney at the Uniting Church of Australia.

An event to mark World Kobanê Day was held at the Uniting Church of Australia in Sydney at the weekend. In his speech, Reverend Bill Crews emphasised his respect for the Kurdish struggle for freedom, saying that it was of great importance. Crews emphasised in particular the importance of the victory of Kobanê as the beginning of the end of ISIS, but also the system of co-chairmanship, in which all positions in mixed structures must be filled by at least one man and one woman, and of democratic autonomy, on the basis of which the different cultures, ethnic and religious identities in Rojava can live together peacefully. He stated that he had met many Kurdish refugees who had fled from ISIS while supporting humanitarian projects and thanked the Kurdish people for their resistance and prayed for their success.

Baran Söğüt from the Sydney Democratic Kurdish Community Centre remarked that Rojava was created with the blood of countless young Kurds and is also home to the Syriacs and many other ethnic identities. He noted that the various components of society could make their voices heard in the model of democratic autonomy and organise themselves.

Söğüt particularly highlighted the role of women's liberation in democratic confederalism. Women are taking the lead in the political, administrative, military and social spheres, he said and pointed out the constant attacks by the Turkish state. He stressed that the ongoing attacks on the civilian population constituted war crimes. The event ended with a concert by Hozan Xanemîr.
