FARC former commander Jesus Santrich was released on Thursday after a last attempt by the government to stop him walking free.

Colombia's Prosecutor office announced the release of FARC former commander and deputy Jesus Santrich a day after the country's Supreme Court ordered his release.

It was the latest development in a legal scandal concerning his detention and possible extradition to the United States.

From prison, Santrich went to the headquarters of the People's Alternative Revolutionary Force of Colombia (FARC). The party will possibly hold a press conference today.

Santrich can now go to the Colombian Congress to take his position as an elected lawmaker.

Seuxis Paucias Hernandez, better known as 'Jesus Santrich', a former guerilla commander was arrested in Bogota 9 April 2018, following an extradition request from the United States Department of Justice (USDOJ) for alleged drug trafficking.

This crime, according to U.S. authorities was committed after he, as part of the now-disarmed FARC, and President Juan Manuel Santos signed the Final Peace Agreement on 24 November 2016.
