Farewell to Şakar martyred in sacrifice action against isolation

Uğur Şakar, who burned himself in February in protest against the isolation of Öcalan and the anti-Kurdish repression in Germany, has been laid to rest in Neuss.

Kurdish activist Uğur Şakar set himself on fire on 20 February in front of a courthouse in Krefeld and died on 22 March in the hospital.

Representatives of the Kurdish umbrella organizations KCDK-E and TJK-E, the student association YJK, the Alevi umbrella organization FEDA and numerous other people took part in the funeral. Former HDP MPs Ahmet Yıldırım, Tuğba Hezer, Lezgin Botan and Sibel Yiğitalp, who are living in exile for political persecution in Turkey, accompanied Uğur Şakar in his last journey.

The mourners carried photos of the deceased with the inscription "Şehîd Namirin" [martyrs are immortal]. The Kurdish activist was laid to rest in Germany at the request of his sisters as there are no relatives living in his hometown Dersim.

Gönül Kaya, an activist of the Kurdish women's movement TJK-E, gave a speech in which she expressed her condolences to "all those resisting". She said: "Uğur Şakar has used his body against fascism and the criminalization policy. Shortly after the anniversary of the abduction of Abdullah Öcalan to Turkey, he burned himself before the court. He set himself alight against injustice. His only wish was that to increase the struggle. We promise that his last wish will be fulfilled.”

The Kurdish activist was then laid to rest to the accompaniment of slogans Şehîd Namirin".

On Saturday, a memorial service will be held for Şakar in the Kurdish Community Center in Dusseldorf city.

Uğur Şakar wrote a letter before his self-immolation in which he named as reasons for his action the isolation of Abdullah Öcalan and the anti-Kurdish repression of the German state.
