Father of 10-day-old baby in prison: We still haven't named him

The impact of prison in little children is something lasting in time.

Ismail Oyunlu, husband of Eylem Oyunlu, who was arrested at the courthouse where she went to testify with her 10-day-old baby and her two-year-old child, said that they did not even named their baby, and that he was turned away from the prison when he asked to see them.

Eylem Oyunlu was remanded in custody on 17 June accused of "aiding an illegal organization" as part of an investigation conducted by Lice Chief Public Prosecutor's Office in Amed. The woman and her two children were sent to Diyarbakır Women's Closed Prison.

Speaking to ANF, her husband, Ismail Oyunlu said that he had gone to the prison to take the clothes the children needed, but could not meet his wife nor the kids. He said that the eyes of the 10-day-old baby, had a problem with his eyes and added that his wife told her lawyer that both children were constantly crying. There will be a monthly visit, said Ismail Oyunlu adding that he is very worried about the situation of his babies. “This is a huge injustice. How can a 10-day-old baby be sent to prison? The Ministry of Justice should make a statement. I do not understand anything from this arrest warrant. My wife has committed no crime. How can I take the kids with me? How can I take care of the 10-day-old baby?”

While prisons conditions are very challenging for adult people, they have far more serious consequences for babies. We heard from one grandmother and from baby Miraz’s mother Gülistan Diken who were both in prison.

For security reasons, the grandmother did not give her name, but recalled the nightmare they experienced where the baby and his mother were taken into custody. “The baby cried non stop in prison and in the end we were forced to take him away from his mother and prison.”
The grandmother added: “After taking the baby away from his mother, he was screaming and crying every time someone approached him.

Yavuz Mahir did not eat any food while he was staying with his mother. Yavuz Mahir has been receiving psychological support since his mother and father entered prison. My grandson still can't express himself. He thinks that her mother has left him.

Gülistan Diken said: "I have turned into a fish out of water. We went out, it was a very difficult time, it is still difficult. It is much more difficult for Miraz. He still cannot forget the situations he lived in prison. He has a lot of resentment towards the guards.”
