Fifth candidate in Colombia local elections killed

With the candidate for mayor of Suárez (Cauca) Karina García Sierra the number of killings of candidates to the local elections rose to five.

Karina García Sierra died along with four other people in an attack with grenades and rifles when she was canvassing in the rural area of ​​the municipality. 

The information of the new killing was given by the Electoral Observation Mission (EOM), which presented its eighth report on the regional campaign in the country for the elections scheduled for next October.

These of october are local and regional elections, in which mayors, governors, councilors will be elected. Over than 121,000 registered candidates are running for a seat.

According to the EOM, Karina García Sierra is the first candidate for mayor to be killed and the second candidate of the Liberal Party who dies violently in this campaign.

The director of the community, former president César Gaviria, lamented the murder of the young candidate.

Vice President Marta Lucía Ramírez also repudiated the crime and described it as "abominable." She also asked for the rejection and “solidarity” of all Colombian society.
