Figen Yüksekdağ, former co-chair of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) attended the funeral of her brother, Necmi Yüksekdağ, who lost his life in Adana on 1 November.
Accompanied by the gendarmerie (military police), Figen Yüksekdağ was taken by plane from the Kandıra Prison in the northwestern Kocaeli province to the southern province of Adana where her family resides.
Yüksekdağ was first taken to her family's house in the Gaziosmanpaşa neighborhood of the Ceyhan district, where the family received condolence visits before the burial.
Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (HEDEP) Co-Chair Tülay Hatimoğulları, MPs Pervin Buldan, Ali Bozan and Adelet Kaya, Socialist Party of the Oppressed (ESP) Co-Chairs Özlem Gümüştaş and Şahin Tümüklü were among those present.
The body of Necmi Yüksekdağ was brought to his family house before being taken to the Gökova Cemetery in the Yumurtalık district for burial.
Figen Yüksekdağ was taken to the cemetery in a prison van. Her brother was laid to rest after religious duties.
Figen Yüksekdağ is the co-founder of the ESP and was its chair until September 2014. After resigning from office, she joined the HDP. In the same year, the ESP joined the HDP, which acts as an umbrella party for several small parties. At the second HDP congress, Figen Yüksekdağ was elected HDP's co-chair on 22 June 2014.
Together with the other co-chair, Selahattin Demirtaş, and numerous other HDP deputies, she was arrested on 4 November 2016 at the instigation of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. Since then, she has been held in custody in the Kandıra High Security Prison.
