A fire broke out in Hakkari prison on Tuesday night. According to reports inmate dormitories were set ablaze after a discussion between a prisoner and a prison guard. Repors say of a protest action by the prisoners, but the motive for it is still not clear.
In the incident Gürsel Yılmaz, a prison guard, was injured and taken to a local hospital.
Human Rights Association (İHD) Hakkari Branch president, İsmail Akbulut, and other members of the association went to the prison and met with officials. There are 235 prisoners in Hakkari jail, 15 of them are politicial prisoners.
The Human Rights Association had just released its annual report on prisoners' rights in Sourtheastern Turkey's prisons. Some 3,263 right abuses were quoted in the report as taking place in 2012.
