Five charged with “insulting Erdoğan”

A criminal court in western province of Manisa's Turgutlu district has sentenced five people to a total of 11 years and 20 days in prison for allegedly insulting Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan during a protest demo condemning the Roboski massacre in which Turkish warplanes killed 34 civilians, mostly children, in the village of Roboski, in Şırnak's Uludere district on 28 December 2011.

The court ruled the sentence following a hearing, rejecting the lawyers' demand in the scope of freedom of expression, according to a report by DIHA (Dicle News Agency).

The five citizens are accused of chanting the slogan “factious Erdoğan”.
