Five soldiers died and seven others were wounded in clashes in Þemdinli (province of Hakkari) on Wednesday, Turkish authorities said on Thursday.
Clashes reportedly broke out following a landmine explosion during the passage of a military convoy between the villages of Baðlar (Nehri) and Zorgeçit (Gerget).
The Governor of Hakkari confirmed the number of casualties and claimed that 16 guerrillas also lost their life. The statement by the governor however hasnt been confirmed by locals nor HPG (Peoples Defense Forces) sources yet. The governor said that the aerial and land operations of the Turkish army continue.
Turkish media claimed six soldiers were killed in Þýrnak the day before but the reports were denied by both the Governor of Þýrnak and HPG sources.
Despite recent developments in Hakkari region, the Turkish government keeps hiding the truth as to the losses of the Turkish army and the dimensions of the ongoing clashes. No official statement has been made up to date despite the fact that Kurdish guerrillas have taken the control of a large area in Þemdinli since 23 July, some areas in Çukurca since 4 August and many areas affiliated to Hakkari city center since 16 August.
