Former HDP Mardin MP Gülser leaves prison 4 months after end of her sentence

Gülser Yıldırım, former HDP Mardin MP, has been released from prison four months after her sentence had ended.

Gülser Yıldırım, the former Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) Mardin MP, has been released from prison four months after the end of her sentence.

Yıldırım was released from the Kocaeli F Type Prison in Kandıra on Monday,  after four petitions were submitted to the Court of Cassation by her lawyer, Azad Yıldırım.

Two MPs from the HDP last month brought the delay in Yıldırım's release to the parliamentary agenda, submitting parliamentary questions to Minister of Justice Bekir Bozdağ. Whether the prevention of Yıldırım's release despite completing her service was a "new method of punishment," they asked the minister.

Yıldırım was arrested on 4 November 2016, together with other HDP deputies. She was sentenced to 7 years and 6 months in prison by the Mardin 3rd Heavy Penal Court for "being a member of an illegal organization."

She was later sentenced to house arrest in the Kobane case. Yıldırım was not released from prison after completing her service although there was no other arrest warrant against her.
