Four people detained in Ankara over May Day activity

The group called on everyone to raise their voices on 1 May.

Several organisations and institutions promoted an action to mark May Day in the Tuzluçayır neighborhood in Ankara’s Mamak district last night.

Police forces blockaded the neighborhood because of the action which was attended by people from Anatolian Culture and Solidarity Association (Aka-Der), Kaldıraç, Workers’ Paper, Independent Revolutionary Class Platform (BDSP), Socialist Party of the Oppressed (ESP), Alınteri, Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP), Peoples’ Democratic Congress (HDK) and Democratic Alevi Union (DAD).

Wearing masks and observing social distance, the crowd chanted slogans such as “Long Live May Day”, “Workers’ unity will defeat capital”, “Long live revolution and socialism” and “Either socialism or death”.

The press release read by the group said; “Organised working class is the only force to build a humane life against the unsustainable capitalist imperialist system. On May Day, we call on everyone to raise their voices.”

Police forces intervened the crowd and detained four people, who include two women. It was not immediately clear where the detainees were taken.
