France Insoumise leader: We should stand by Kurds

Mélenchon drew attention to the role of the Kurds in the future of Syria.

Jean-Luc Mélenchon, leader and deputy of France Insoumise, spoke at the discussions in the Foreign Commission of the French National Assembly, and drew attention to the role of the Kurds in the future of Syria.

Recalling the visit by the Commission President Marielle de Sarnez and a delegation of French deputies to the Autonomous Administration of Northern and Eastern Syria, Mélenchon said the visit was important in terms of giving the Kurds the message of "we are standing by you".

'Turkey does not want Kurdish autonomy!'

Mélenchon spoke of the danger posed by Turkey and recalled Turkey's occupation of Afrin and of other parts of Northern Syria. He added that Kurds do not want to divide Syria but propose a federative structure.

Jean-Luc Mélenchon also addressed the issue of the trial of ISIS mercenaries of French citizenship captured in Syria and Iraq. He said that the mercenaries should be tried in Syria where they committed the crime and noted that this region is not under the control of the Syrian regime.

Mélenchon implied that the mercenaries could be tried by judicial bodies under the Autonomous Administration.
