‘Freedom for Öcalan’ demonstrations in Europe

The 19th anniversary of the 9 October international plot against Kurdish people's leader Abdullah Öcalan has been protested in many cities of Europe.

October 9, 2017 marks the 19th anniversary of Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan’s forced departure from Syria. Kurdish people see this date as the start of the international plot against Öcalan and Kurds take to the streets every anniversary of the plot.

FRANCE - MONTPELLIER

Upon the initiative of Democratic Kurdish Society Center (NCDK), Kurdistan people living in southern French city Montpellier gathered at Petrou Pitot Square and marched from there until Comedie Square in the city center.

Speaking here, Montpellier NCDK co-chairperson Cevat Güneş said: "The plot did not succeed as we witness its failure with the Rojava Revolution. Freedom will only be reachable for the Kurdish people when leader Apo is freed. For that reason we will not cease our struggle until we achieve his freedom."

FRANCE - TOULOUSE

Kurdish Women's Movement in France organised a demonstration and rally in French city Toulouse against the 9 October plot.

Kurdistan people and their friends gathered at Francois Verdiere Square, and marched from there through the busiest streets of the city. After a 5 minutes sit-in at Jean Jaurese street, the mass walked through the Wilson Square and held a demonstration at Capitol Square.

During the demonstration, speeches were made by Ali Ataç on behalf of NCDK, Pierre Granet on behalf of of New Anti-capitalist Party, and leaflets prepared by Kurdish Women's Movement in France were distributed to the people. The speakers highlighted that the Kurdish people will never give up their struggle for their leader's freedom.

GERMANY - DUISBURG

People's Councils in the German cities Duisburg and Emmerich organised on the occasion of the 9 October plot a meeting at Kumkapi festival hall in Oberhausen.

During the meeting that was attended by around 300 Kurdish people, co-chair of KCDK-E, Yüksel Koç, and HDP parliamentarian Tugba Hezer held speeches condemning the international plot.

GERMANY – HAMBURG

Rojbin Women’s Council organised a demonstration in front of the Turkish Consulate in Hamburg in protest at the international plot against the Kurdish leader.

While the German police prevented the demonstrators from unfurling banners of Öcalan, Rojbin Women’s Council Co-Spokesperson Leyla Kaya strongly condemned this attitude which –she said- serves the politics of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

Remarking that the plot targeted the will of all Kurdish people in the person of Öcalan, Kaya said they will continue to condemn this plot at any cost.

The demonstration ended with demonstrators leaving a black wreath in front of the Turkish Consulate.

BRITAIN - LONDON

Another demonstration in condemnation at the 9 October international plot was held in the English capital city London.

More than a thousand people joined a march held under the lead of Roj Women's Council. The march started in front of People's Council. Demonstrators chanted "Long Live Leader Apo", and commemorated Mehmet Aksoy (Firaz Dağ) from YPG Press Office who was recently martyred in Raqqa.

At the end of the march, speeches were held by Besime Başar on behalf of Roj Women's Council, and Evrim Yilmaz, co-chair of Britain Kurdish People's Council.
