French Senator: Turkey reminds me of Chile under Pinochet

French Communist Party senator, Christine Prunaud, was in Agri to follow elections when she was arrested

French Communist Party senator, Christine Prunaud was in Turkey to watch the election process.

She was taken into custody on Sunday and said that the situation remainded her of the Pinochet era in Chile.

Prunaud was detained along with Pascal Torre, the International Relations Officer of the Communist Party, and Hülya Turan, the provincial secretary of Bas-Rhin while they were following the election process in Agri. The three were released shortly after.

Senator Prunaud, in an interview to Humanite, said:

"I do not regret taking place in this delegation. Indeed, I have strengthened my thoughts about the Turkish regime more and more. I regard it as a dictatorship that is getting more and more settled. I knew that there was no freedom of movement and freedom of expression, but when you see it first hand there, you can only think about those who live there. Because in the end we return home."

Prunaud added: "There are a lot of people in distress and when I listen to them, I can only think that this regime reminds me of Pinochet's Chile. Our support to Kurds can only be stronger."
