General Directorate: 138,016 prisoners in Turkish jails

According to recently released figures of General Directorate for Prisons and Detention Houses of Turkish Ministry of Justice, there are a total of 138,016 prisoners on remand and convicted in Turkish jails as of 28 January 2013.

The figures reveal a remarkable increase in the number of prisoners remanded in custody and convicted, which was 120,814 in 2010 and reached 136,020 in late 2012.

According to the figures by the Directorate, among the 136,020 prisoners 31,707 are on remand and 104,313 are convicted.

Prisoners remanded in custody consist of 28,564 men, 1583 children and 1560 women, while the convicted are made up of 100,617 men, 3278 women and 418 children.
