General strike starts in Iran and Rojhilat as protests continue

Amidst the ongoing protests against the regime, people have started a general strike across Iran and Rojhilat today.

The uprisings in Iran and Rojhilat (Eastern Kurdistan) that broke out in mid-September after the murder of 22-year-old Kurdish woman Jina Mahsa Amini by the Iranian morality police continue despite massive violence by the Iranian regime. There are daily reports of demonstrators being killed, including many young women and minors. In Zahedan in Sistan Balochistan province, at least 66 people were killed on "Bloody Friday" last week. Since then, 16 more people have been killed in the city, according to Amnesty International.

In Rojhilat, women-led protests continued on Friday evening, with many people taking to the streets in Sine (Sanandaj), Xuremawa, Kirmaşan and Bokan, among others. Fierce clashes are currently reported in Sine, and several people have been shot, according to unconfirmed reports. According to the Kurdish human rights organisation Hengaw, streets are blocked and the security forces have lost control over several neighbourhoods.

Pupils and students continue to be particularly active in the uprisings in Iran. Students have once again called for a boycott and demanded the release of their arrested fellow students and an end to the repression at the universities. Students at Tehran University have declared that they will continue to demand their rights with the slogan "Jin Jiyan Azadî".

In the meantime, activists have declared today “day of protest” against the Iranian regime across the country. On the other hand, 400 writers and translators from Iran and abroad called on Iranian groups and unions to launch a general strike throughout the country.

While a general strike has already been launched in some cities of Rojhilat, protests have erupted in some cities and universities in Iran.

The strike is joined by shopkeepers who have taken down the shutters in Sine, Mahabad, Ciwanro, Bokan, Meriwan, Seqiz, Diwandere and other Rojhilat cities. Besides the strike, people continue demonstrating on the streets in Meşhed, Efsehan, Tahran, Şiraz, Kerec, Sine and many other cities.

Protests have also been launched by students at several universities, demanding the release of detained fellow students.
