A group of German parliamentarians and human rights defenders called on Merkel’s government to make political demands on the Turkish government to ensure the fulfillment of demands by Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) and Kurdistan Women’s Liberation Party (PAJK) prisoners on hunger strike in Turkish prisons. German deputies pointed out that the Kurdish issue can only be solved through peaceful ways.
The hunger strike which was started by Kurdish political prisoners demanding the recognition of Kurdish people’s democratic demands has entered the 37th day.
German deputies called attention to the prisoners’ state of health and prison conditions in Turkey and pointed out that prisoners will be facing critical diseases by the 40th day of the strikes.
Reminding of the severe isolation imposed on PKK Leader Abdullah Öcalan for more than 400 days now, German parliamentarians stated that; “The Turkish government continues to disregard the human rights of Kurdish people by using its legal, police and military power against them. We already know that 1555 cases of torture were recorded in the year of 2011 alone. On the other hand, living conditions in Turkish prisons are worsening more and more every passing day and prisoners aren’t provided with necessary medical needs.”
Deputies underlined that they supported the demands of Kurdish prisoners on hunger strike and remarked that a peaceful solution to the Kurdish problem could only be ensured by the participation of all actors in the process of peace and improvement of Öcalan’s conditions and human rights in the country.
German parliamentarians ended calling on the federal government to take action against the Turkish government’s violence policy against the Kurdish people.
