The Green Party of Germany called on voters in Turkey and abroad to "join the democratic transformation process" in the May 14 elections in Turkey and North Kurdistan. The Green party also called for the Kurdish question to be resolved through dialogue and peace.
In a written statement about the upcoming elections, the Green Party emphasized the importance of relations with Turkey due to more than 3 million people from Turkey and North Kurdistan living in Germany.
"We want to further strengthen our relations with a democratic Turkey following the elections,” said the statement, pointing out that the Green Party favours those who fight for democracy, rule of law, equality and human rights in Turkey, and demanding the release of all political prisoners.
The statement remarked that the Kurdish question should also be resolved through peace and dialogue. It called on the Turkish state to abandon its aggressive policy in foreign relations, stressing that if Turkey returned to democracy and the rule of law, the negotiations for EU membership should resume.
The statement concluded: “Turkey, which has been under Erdogan's authoritarian rule for many years, has a great chance to restore democracy and the rule of law with the parliamentary and presidential elections. We kindly ask voters in Germany and Turkey to go to the polls and participate in the democratic transformation in the country.”
