The German government took action in order to move its troops from İncirlik base to Jordan after the AKP regime once again rejected a group of German parliamentarians’ request to visit the base. The German Defense Minister is set to go to Jordan this weekend.
The crisis that began after Ankara once again rejected a group of Federal Defense Commission member German parliamentarians’ request to visit the base. The German government considers withdrawing its troops stationed at İncirlik base in order to support the fight against ISIS.
The plan to move the 260 German soldiers based at İncirlik to another country is becoming more clear. After the AKP regime’s most recent obstruction, the German government considers Jordan as its first alternative.
MUWAFFAK SALTI INSTEAD OF İNCİRLİK
News site Spiegel Online announced that the German Defense Ministry is sending a military delegation to Jordan today for inspection. Moreover, Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen is set to visit Jordan this weekend with the same purpose.
German troops in İncirlik are expected to be moved to the Muwaffak Salti military base in Jordan after meetings with the Amman government. Some commentators claim that the relocation of German soldiers and Tornado reconnaissance aircraft at İncirlik to a country that is not part of the coalition against ISIS will have an impact on the fight against ISIS.
Angela Merkel described Ankara’s obstruction of the German Federal Parliament Defense Commission’s visit to İncirlik set for Tuesday as ‘an unpleasant decision.’
Unlike Merkel, the Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel expressed his hope that Turkey would change its decision. Gabriel noted that German troops could no longer remain stationed in Turkey if Ankara’s decision was a final one, and said "However, we hope that Turkey will change its position."
ERDOĞAN HAD SAID ‘WE WILL NOT ALLOW THOSE PARLIAMENTARIANS’
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and other Turkish officials had said "We will not allow those parliamentarians to enter our country" and began to prevent German parliamentarians from visiting İncirlik base after the German Federal Parliament recognized by a majority vote the Armenian Genocide of 1915 in July 2016.
