Government reshuffle amid corruption probe
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan announced late Wednesday the new Cabinet following a meeting with President Abdullah Gül to whom he presented the list of new ministers.
Three ministers had already announced their resignation amid the bribery and corruption scandal on Wednesday, Economy Minister Zafer Çağlayan, Interior Minister Muammer Güler and Environment and Urban Planning Minister Erdoğan Bayraktar who also called on the PM to resign, saying that a “majority of the construction plans” that are mentioned as unlawful in the corruption investigation were approved upon the orders of the prime minister.
Zafer Çağlayan has been replaced by AKP Denizli deputy Nihat Zeybekçi, Muammer Güler by Efkan Ala, undersecretary of the Prime Ministry, and Erdoğan Bayraktar by AKP İstanbul deputy İdris Güllüce.
Ankara Deputy Emrullah İşler will replace Bekir Bozdağ as deputy prime minister while Bozdağ himself has been appointed as the new Minister of Justice.
Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, AKP's deputy chair in charge of external affairs, became the new EU Minister, Ayşenur İslam has replaced Family and Social Affairs Minister, Fatma Şahin, who will run for Gaziantep mayoral post, and Lütfi Elvan named as the new name for Transport Minister to replace Binali Yıldırım who is a candidate for İzmir mayoral post.
Sports and Youth Minister Suat Kılıç has also been replaced, by Akif Çağatay Kılıç, and Industry and Technology Ministrer Nihat Ergin by Fikri Işık.
The first resignation from the AKP came on 16 December, from MP Hakan Şükür who is said to have left the party because of his close relations with the Gülen movement.
Following the bribery and fraud investigation and operation which led to the detention of dozens of people, including the sons of three cabinet ministers, businessmen and senior bureaucrats, Economy Minister Zafer Çağlayan, Interior Minister Muammer Güler and Environment and Urban Planning Minister Erdoğan Bayraktar announced their resignation on Wednesday.
Differently from two other ministers, Bayraktar also resigned from the AKP, while former Minister of the Interior, İdris Naim Şahin, also resigned yesterday.
More members of the ruling AK Party are expected to resign in the coming days.
