Governor of Kirkuk denounces strong doubts in election results

Kirkuk Governor Rakan Said announced that they rejected the results due to the shady general elections held in Iraq and South Kurdistan on May 12.

Governor of Kirkuk, Rakan Said held a press conference in Kirkuk, remarking that people have been demonstrating for days after the confirmation of evident irregularities in the elections.

The governor said the fraud in elections has created a lack of trust between the electorate and the election commission, noting that they rejected the results.

“Although the official results have been announced, we have not given up our demand for votes to be recounted by hand. Unfortunately, all the happenings have started to threaten the peace among the ethnic groups in Kirkuk.”

Noting that hundreds of ballot boxes remain at voting stations, Said continued; “There are a total of 306 ballot boxes that have not been counted yet and not brought to the election commission in Kirkuk. It is still unknown how many votes for which parties are in these ballot boxes.”
