In the May 14 elections, Erdogan’s rival Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu received 34,337 votes (57.6 percent) in Switzerland. While the election turnout stood at 56.79 percent, Kılıçdaroğlu beat Erdogan by getting 10,300 more votes. Erdogan received 40.33% of the vote.
The second round of the presidential election will be held in Switzerland between May 20-24. The Labour and Freedom alliance in Switzerland and the Green Left Party Swiss Election Coordination Centre held a meeting in Bern and Aargau on Thursday, May 18, and started the election campaign for the second round.
In a statement, the coordination stated that their aim in this round was to urge voters who did not vote in the 14 May election to go to the polls and defeat the one-man dictatorship.
The statement said that buses would transport voters to the polling stations in Aarau, St. Gallen, Basel, Zürich and Bellizona.
During the meetings, where the importance of the second round was emphasized, the importance of taking every single voter to the polls was emphasized. For this purpose, it was decided to form native land groups which would call every single voter and bring them to the polling stations.
The Green Left Party election coordination called on voters to definitely go to the polls.
The Chair of the Swiss Alevi Unions Federation, Binali Sağlam, representatives of the CHP, the Green Left Party and the Labour and Freedom alliance components attended the meeting held at the Windisch Alevi association in the Aargau canton.
Following this meeting, it was decided to hire buses in the cities of St. Gallen, Aarau, Zürich, Bellinzona and Basel to transport voters to the polling stations as of Saturday, May 20.
During the meeting in Bern, which was also attended by HDP former MP Yurdusev Özsökmenler, SYKP founding chair Tuncay Yılmaz and former mayor of Batman Nejdet Atalay, it was stressed that Erdogan would definitely be defeated in the second round after his failure to win in the first round despite all the pressure and tricks by the government.
Tuncay Yılmaz, SYKP founding chair and Green Left Party European coordination member, said: “We started the election campaign for the second round of the presidential election in Europe. All our representatives have started working to complete the work they left unfinished in the first round.”
Yılmaz added: “We continue our campaign in a spirit of mobilization all over Europe, especially in Switzerland. Erdogan's defeat will pave the way for a peaceful Turkey. Our goal is to take those who voted in the first round to the polls again. Our second goal is to persuade those who did not vote in the first round and get their votes.”
