The Turkish government continues to remain silent about the detentions of workers, soldiers and since Sunday of an MP, carried out by People’s Defense Forces (HPG) guerrillas who have intensified their actions in the last year because of the isolation imposed on Kurdish people’s leader Abdullah Öcalan, political operations against Kurdish politicians and military operations against guerrilla forces.
Around 70 people were detained in the last four months and at least 115 construction vehicles in the region were destroyed by Kurdish guerrillas in the month of July.
According to HPG sources, guerrillas arrested 31 people in May and released 16 of them. While arrests by Kurdish guerrillas remarkably decreased in the month of June, when seven people were arrested, the figures recorded an increase in July in line with an upsurge in clashes in the Kurdish region. 21 people were detained or arrested in July, according to HPG war statement for the month.
Arrests carried out by the guerrillas increased in the month of August when HPG launched the “revolutionary operation” in Þemdinli and Çukurca in the province of Hakkari.
Governor candidate for Muþ, Kenan Erenoðlu, specialist sergeant Zihni Koç, sergeant Abdullah Sörfçeler, police officer Nadir Özgen and specialist sergeant Kemal Ekinci are among those who have been under HPG custody since different dates, some of them being for the last one year.
Despite the fact that HPG has promised to apply the Geneva Convention which established the rules of law for prisoners the government keep launching operations that risk the life of HPG prisoners.
In a recent interview to BBC Turkish service, Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) co-chair Selahattin Demirtaþ stated that their party is ready to work for the release of the detained soldiers and called on the AKP government to take the necessary steps on the issue.
