Hahn: The crisis in Turkey can’t be resolved with aid packages

“The current economic problems in Turkey are fundamentally problems they created themselves. This situation cannot be remedied by the EU or other member states giving Ankara aid packages or credit.”

European Commissioner for European Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations Johannes Hahn spoke before Turkish President Erdogan’s visit to Germany and said the crisis in Turkey can’t be resolved with aid packages or credit.

Johannes Hahn spoke to Die Welt about financial aid for Turkey before Erdogan’s visit to Berlin on September 27-29.

Hahn pointed out that the financial issues have been created by Ankara itself and added that the responsibility falls primarily with the political leadership.

He said: “The current economic problems in Turkey are fundamentally problems they created themselves. This situation cannot be remedied by the EU or other member states giving Ankara aid packages or credit.”

“I don’t see the necessity for us to get involved at once,” added Hahn and stressed that the Turkish regime should first implement the reforms.

Hahn said, “A sound monetary policy, an independent central bank and the strong protection of democratic foundations might help for the economy to turn upward.”

“I believe the responsibility primarily falls to the political leadership,” said Hahn and added that for a stable Turkey, reforms first need to be implemented.

Hahn said Western companies may invest again when political trust is established.
